Well, today was the opening day for the Women’s Softball College World Series, so I thought I’d watch. Big mistake! The game came on at 11 am and I joined it not too long after that. OU is playing James Madison who is one of those cinderella teams that has come through the Regionals unexpectedly. They weren’t even ranked and still managed to win their Regional and Super Regional against some pretty tough opponents. This kind of set up OU. Here’s the big, bad #1 team in the nation going against this young team that has come out of nowhere and they are playing in the first games of the College World Series, best of three. OU was a heavy favorite as they should be. I have stopped watching the game and I believe it’s the third inning.
OU didn’t do anything in their at bats in the first and second. They even had some unusual strikeouts which doesn’t happen very often. Meanwhile, JMU was doing their share of striking out, but they were also putting people on base. Now in the top of the third, OU makes two critical errors in the infield, one at second and right after that, one at third. Both were clearly errors, something that doesn’t normally happen with these two players. I think the second baseman is a Golden Glove winner at some point in her career and to her defense, the call at 1st was wrong. The video shows the runner clearly out, but the umpire called her safe, but it was close. As for third base, I don’t know what happened there. She just let the ball drop out of her glove and everybody was safe. Now, that’s not the worst. The next JMU batter comes up and is given a gift. A three run home-run over right-centerfield! OU – 0 vs JMU – 3! That’s not the way to start the World Series, but it’s kind of typical for OU teams. They seem to choke under pressure. I hope the rest of the game gets better, but it’s going to be hard because the JMU pitcher looks pretty good right now.
The OU men’s golf team lost to Pepperdine in the Men’s Collegiate Golf Championship yesterday! At least in this one they were the underdog to start off with and didn’t change that outcome
I’ll catch up with the Women’s game later. I can’t watch when things go bad. That’s my choice and I’m sticking with it. If they lose today, they can go through the losers bracket and still get into the finals, but that’s not the way you want to go. Not for this team. They need to get their act together and quickly!
