Game Date: 11/27/2021
OU Loses!
Final Score: OU 33 – OSU 37
We just made too many mistakes and gave the game away! Of course I didn’t watch the game until the very end. Still, the part I watched didn’t reflect very well on OU. During the last few minutes of the game, OU had the ball and was moving until things started going wrong.
On 2nd and 5, the center snapped the ball when Williams wasn’t ready. Don’t know why, but to Williams’ credit, he picked it up and attempted to make a play. And again, he searched for a receiver, but they weren’t getting free. Instead of scrambling forward trying to get as much as he could, he rolled backwards and eventually lost yards.
On 3rd and 7, he again tried to pass, couldn’t find a receiver, scrambled backwards and ran out of bounds for another loss.
Then on 4th down and 10, he had to scramble immediately, but went backwards and then decided to run for the 1st down. He got tripped up just as he took off and fell about two yards short. Game over.
Just prior to that, we had muffed a punt down on our 5 yard line. Why they tried to catch it that late in the game, I don’t know, but Gray did the attempt and dropped the ball which OSU recovered. Two plays later they went in for the winning TD. Up until that play, it was 33 to 30 in favor of OU. All we had to do was keep them from scoring a TD and we would have won, but we made too many mistakes.
I saw where we also allowed a kickoff return for a TD. That’s another mistake you can’t make against a good team.
OU’s season is practically over. They will play in a Bowl game, probably the Alamo Bowl here in San Antonio and speculation is they will play Oregon. Don’t know if they win that game or now, but it doesn’t much matter.
This season has been a big disappointment. First with Spencer Rattler not becoming the QB we all thought he was and then having to turn the ball over to Caleb Williams who just didn’t have the experience or moxie to make it happen. He’s probably the QB of the future and I hope he matures a lot during the off-season. We need to bring in some better defensive backs and linemen and fix the OU offensive line. I hope the experience gained this year fixes some of those issues.
Then we need to find a running back that has break-away speed. Kennedy Brooks was a powerful runner, but he didn’t have speed. I think Marcus Majors might be a fast runner, but for some reason he didn’t get to play this year. Hopefully, we’ll have him full-time next year or pick up a speedster from the transfer portal.
I would assume Rattler is going to announce his transfer pretty soon. I don’t see him staying around behind Williams. That’s OK because Rattler just doesn’t have the attitude of a leader or winner.
Ok, that’s it for this season. I might write about the Bowl game or I might not. We’ll just have to wait and see.
